Remocode System Requirements

Before installing Remocode, verify that your Mac meets the necessary requirements. This guide covers everything from the minimum specs to recommended hardware for the best experience.

Operating System

Minimum: macOS 12 Monterey Recommended: macOS 14 Sonoma or newer

Remocode is built on Electron and requires macOS 12 or later. Older versions of macOS are not supported. Remocode is currently macOS only — Windows and Linux versions are not yet available.

Hardware Requirements (Remocode Only)

For running Remocode with cloud-based AI providers (Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, Groq):

| Component | Minimum | Recommended | |-----------|---------|-------------| | Processor | Apple M1 or Intel Core i5 | Apple M1 Pro or newer | | RAM | 4 GB | 8 GB | | Disk Space | 500 MB | 1 GB | | Display | 1280x800 | 1440x900 or higher | | Internet | Required for cloud AI | Broadband recommended |

Remocode itself is lightweight. The Electron framework and the application together use roughly 200-400 MB of RAM during normal operation.

Additional Requirements for Ollama (Local AI)

If you plan to run AI models locally with Ollama, the hardware requirements increase significantly:

| Model | RAM Required | Disk Space | Recommended Mac | |-------|-------------|------------|-----------------| | Mistral | 8 GB | ~4 GB | M1, 8 GB RAM | | Llama 3.2 | 8 GB | ~5 GB | M1, 8 GB RAM | | Code Llama | 8-16 GB | ~4-13 GB | M1 Pro, 16 GB RAM | | Qwen 3.5 | 8 GB | ~5 GB | M1, 8 GB RAM | | DeepSeek V3 | 16 GB | ~8-20 GB | M2 Pro, 16 GB RAM |

Important: These RAM requirements are for the AI model alone. You will also need RAM for Remocode, your browser, your IDE, and other applications. Budget 4-8 GB on top of the model requirements.

Network Requirements

For cloud AI providers:

  • A stable internet connection is required
  • Latency under 100ms provides the best experience
  • Typical AI requests use 10-100 KB of data per interaction

For Ollama (local):

  • Internet is needed only for the initial model download
  • After downloading, Ollama works completely offline
  • No data is sent to external servers

For Telegram integration:

  • Internet is required on both your Mac and your mobile device
  • The Telegram Bot API uses minimal bandwidth

Supported Mac Models

Remocode runs on both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs:

Apple Silicon (native support):

  • MacBook Air M1, M2, M3, M4
  • MacBook Pro M1, M1 Pro, M1 Max, M2, M2 Pro, M2 Max, M3, M3 Pro, M3 Max, M4, M4 Pro, M4 Max
  • Mac Mini M1, M2, M2 Pro, M4, M4 Pro
  • Mac Studio M1 Max, M1 Ultra, M2 Max, M2 Ultra, M4 Max
  • iMac M1, M3, M4
  • Mac Pro M2 Ultra

Intel (Rosetta not required):

  • MacBook Pro 2017 or later (with macOS 12)
  • MacBook Air 2018 or later
  • iMac 2017 or later
  • Mac Mini 2018 or later
  • Mac Pro 2019 or later

Performance Expectations

On Apple Silicon Macs:

  • App launch: under 2 seconds
  • Tab creation: instant
  • Split pane creation: instant
  • AI panel toggle: instant
  • Ollama inference: 10-50 tokens/second depending on model and chip

On Intel Macs:

  • App launch: 2-5 seconds
  • All UI operations: smooth
  • Ollama inference: 5-20 tokens/second (significantly slower than Apple Silicon)

Checking Your System

To verify your Mac's specs:

  • Click the Apple menu () in the top-left corner
  • Select About This Mac
  • Check your macOS version, chip, and memory

From the terminal, you can also run:

# Check macOS version
sw_vers

# Check available RAM
sysctl -n hw.memsize | awk '{print $0/1073741824 " GB"}'

# Check available disk space
df -h /

Optimizing Performance

If Remocode feels slow on your system:

  • Close unused tabs and panes — each pane runs a shell process
  • Reduce split panes — 2-4 panes is optimal for most screens
  • Use cloud AI instead of Ollama if your Mac has limited RAM
  • Quit memory-heavy applications when using Ollama
  • Reset zoom (⌘0) — extreme zoom levels can affect rendering performance

Planning for Ollama

If you specifically want local AI models, here is a purchase guide:

  • Casual use (simple completions): Any M1 Mac with 8 GB RAM running Mistral
  • Regular development: M1 Pro/M2 with 16 GB RAM running Llama 3.2 or Code Llama
  • Heavy use (complex reasoning): M2 Pro/M3 Pro with 32 GB RAM running DeepSeek V3

Apple Silicon's unified memory architecture makes it particularly well-suited for running local AI models, as the GPU and CPU share the same memory pool.

Summary

For most developers using cloud AI providers, any modern Mac with 8 GB of RAM and macOS 12 will run Remocode smoothly. If you want local AI through Ollama, invest in a Mac with 16 GB or more of RAM and an Apple Silicon chip for the best experience.
