Claude Code Workspace: Save Your Perfect Terminal Layout

Learn how to create, save, and restore terminal workspace layouts optimized for Claude Code sessions in Remocode. Never set up your panes again.

Every Claude Code session starts the same way. You open your terminal, split panes, resize them, navigate to project directories, and launch the agent. Then you do it all again the next day. Remocode's workspace presets eliminate this repeated setup entirely.

The Setup Problem

A productive Claude Code workspace typically includes multiple panes:

  • A main pane for Claude Code
  • A pane for manual testing and commands
  • A pane for watching log output
  • A pane for git operations and file inspection

Setting this up in a standard terminal takes 2-3 minutes. Over a week of daily sessions, that is 15-20 minutes of pure setup time. Over a month, more than an hour. Over a year, you lose a full working day to terminal arrangement.

Creating Your Workspace in Remocode

Remocode provides a keyboard shortcut that creates an optimized layout instantly.

The Quick Grid

Press Cmd+Shift+W to create a 2x2 grid of terminal panes. Four equally sized panes appear, each ready for a different task. This is the most common layout for AI coding sessions.

Custom Layouts

Beyond the 2x2 grid, you can create any layout you want:

  • Split horizontally or vertically to add panes
  • Resize panes by dragging borders
  • Move panes to arrange them in your preferred order

Saving the Layout

Once your layout is perfect — panes sized correctly, positioned where you want them — save it as a workspace preset. The preset captures:

  • Pane positions and sizes — exact dimensions and arrangement
  • Working directories — each pane remembers which folder it was in
  • Session state — running processes and command history persist

Loading a Workspace Preset

Tomorrow, when you start a new coding session, load your saved preset. One click and your entire workspace is back: four panes, correct sizes, correct directories. You launch Claude Code and start working immediately.

Session Persistence

Remocode's workspace presets are persistent across restarts. Close the app, reboot your Mac, open Remocode again — your saved workspaces are still there. This is not just window arrangement; it is full session state.

Optimized Layouts for Claude Code

Here are three workspace layouts that work well for Claude Code development:

Layout 1: Solo Agent

  • Top left (60%): Claude Code main session
  • Top right (40%): File browser / manual edits
  • Bottom left (60%): Test runner / build output
  • Bottom right (40%): Git log and status

This is ideal for focused single-agent work where you want full visibility into what Claude Code is doing.

Layout 2: Agent Plus Monitor

  • Left (70%): Claude Code full-height pane
  • Right top (30%): Terminal for manual commands
  • Right bottom (30%): Tail logs or watch output

This maximizes the Claude Code pane for long output sessions while keeping monitoring tools accessible.

Layout 3: Multi-Agent

  • Four equal panes (2x2): Each running a different AI agent or a different Claude Code session with a different task

This is the power user layout for vibe coders who run multiple agents simultaneously. Use the supervisor on each pane for autonomous operation.

Tips for Workspace Efficiency

  • Name your presets descriptively — "Backend API Session" is better than "Workspace 1"
  • Create project-specific presets — different projects have different needs
  • Save frequently — after adjusting sizes or adding panes, save the updated layout
  • Use Cmd+Shift+W as a starting point — the 2x2 grid is a good default to customize from
  • Combine with supervisor — save a preset with supervisor enabled on specific panes for fully automated sessions

Why This Matters

The overhead of setting up your workspace is small on any single day. But it compounds. More importantly, friction at the start of a coding session affects your momentum. When you can load a preset and start coding in seconds, you preserve the energy and focus that produce your best work.
